Sheila Cherfilus McCormick Resigns Ahead Of Expected House Expulsion Vote

WASHINGTON D.C. — There’s a specific kind of tension that grips the House of Representatives when a member is about to be cast out. We’ve only seen it six times in American history. Yet as of Tuesday, 21 April 2026, Florida Democrat Sheila Cherfilus McCormick decided that she would not be number seven. She resigned “effective immediately,” just moments before the House Ethics Committee was about to make its final decision.

Look, this wasn’t a sudden change of heart. This didn’t just happen out of the blue. It was a strategic and preemptive measure to avoid an expulsion vote that lawmakers from both parties were already preparing to sign. She has now given up her position in government, and although she’s stepped down herself, it’s hard to say you’re in control of things when you’re abandoning a failing situation.

The $5 Million Paper Trail

The main problem in this case is a huge $5 million in federal funds for disasters. Prosecutors say that in 2021, money from FEMA (the Federal Emergency Management Agency), designed to help during COVID-19, was mistakenly sent to Trinity Health Care Services, a business connected with her family. And, instead of sending it back, the government says the money went through many different accounts and was used to pay for her attempt at her 2021 run for Congress.

But the House Ethics Committee had not just taken the government’s word for it. Over two years of investigating, in March 2026, they discovered 25 different ethics violations. She funded her campaign through a massive amount of fraud as well as illegal means to get people to covertly donate. The committee was about to tell her to quit when she filed for escape, the reporting in The Guardian suggests.

“Witch Hunts” and Legal Realities

True to political form, Cherfilus-McCormick didn’t quit with an apology. Her last appearance in person was on 21 April 2026, when she delivered a wide-ranging broadside against the committee—describing the entire probe as a “witch hunt.” She said the panel “violated her due process” by not granting an extension requested by her new attorney.

She said, “I am taking a step back so I can fight for my neighbours in Florida.” However, the real battle is in a federal court. She has resigned; however, she is still under a 15-count federal indictment for money laundering and theft. Here is the part that escapes most people: she does not have a scheduled federal trial until sometime in early 2027. She may be out of the office now, but this story is set to torpedo Florida’s 20th District for at least another year.

The Vacuum in the 20th District

Now the question becomes who will fill in for her. Both the Broward and Palm Beach parts of Florida’s 20th District are virtually leaderless. The vacancy will force Governor Ron DeSantis to call a special election, and the primary is already shaping up like a circus.

The activist Elijah Manley, who has been a persistent challenge for her over the years, is already emerging as the frontrunner for the Democratic primary scheduled for 18 August 2026. Nobody is missing the irony on this one. Last year, she famously sued Manley for defamation after he referred to her as a “crook.” According to AP News, the Ethics Committee’s findings have basically vindicated her loudest critics.

In any event, the Democrats face a big problem. These are the last things Hakeem Jeffries could afford—to lose a member to an enormous fraud scandal with the 2026 midterms around the corner. This is a developing story, and with her criminal trial a year off, the repercussions are by no means over.

Do you think she will “George Santos” and run again in the August primary, or is this it for Cherfilus-McCormick? The chances are slim, we would say—but in Florida politics, one never says never.
